Virus ruin your .exe file association?
« on: April 25, 2011, 05:16:25 PM »
This applies to XP. Has happened numerous times after a virus has been removed and you try to run any .exe file. The unknown file association window will come up and ask you what program you want to use to open the file.

Solution:
1) Click start, run, type command.com
2) type c:\windows\regedit.exe, hit enter
3) GoTo: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.EXE
4) Set the (default) to exefile
5) GoTo: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
6) Set the (default) to the following *EXACTLY* as shown: "%1"%*

Close regedit. I would recommend running system file checker to attempt to fix any further corruption. From the command prompt type sfc /scannow. It may ask for XP media.

UPDATE:
If you run into this with vista or windows 7, command.com needs to be ran with administrative rights. Step 1 will be replaced with: Open windows explorer and navigate to c:\windows\system32, right click on command and select run as administrator.

I am just adding to the content here:

You can also access the Command prompt via "all Programs"  -> "Accessories" -> Right click select "runs as Administrator"

I have created a batch file the does this for me off a Portable Apps thumbdrive.
